Recently, CLOU ' 2MW/8MWh independent energy storage project in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, officially commenced operation and began participating in the local grid's primary frequency regulation service. The Project achieved grid connection just one week after the equipment arrived on site. The Project employs CLOU's 10ft containerized full-liquid-cooled energy storage system, the Aqua-C2.5S mini, equipped with CLOU’s self-developed string-type liquid-cooled PCS. It is the first AC/DC integrated grid-side energy storage project implemented by CLOU in Japan. The Japanese market sets extremely high technical and grid connection standards, marking a significant breakthrough for CLOU in the Japanese power market and gaining recognition from the local grid.
Local Adaptation
2MW is the "golden capacity" in Japan's commercial and industrial energy storage market, offering three key advantages: load matching, power trading economics, and simplified grid synchronization approval. To meet this demand, CLOU has introduced the 10ft miniaturized AC/DC integrated liquid-cooled energy storage system solution. This enables commercial and industrial users to rapidly deploy 2MW energy storage stations even with limited land resources and investment budgets, enhancing return on investment through the JEPX arbitrage + grid services business model.
The Aqua-C2.5S mini features a compact and lightweight design, with a capacity of 2MWh (expandable to 2.5 MWh). Fully configured, the single battery container weighs under 23 tons, meeting Japan's road transport weight limits for most areas. Its compact design also allows for flexible deployment on irregular terrains. For example, a 2MW/8MWh project using CLOU's integrated solution requires a minimum site area of only 240 m², significantly improving land use efficiency.
Efficient Performance
High Safety and Reliability
Facing Japan's earthquake-prone geological conditions, the Aqua-C2.5 series complies with the IEEE 693 high seismic standard, easily meeting local seismic and transportation requirements. The system also builds a four-tier safety defense system to ensure ultimate safety, including cell fault early warning, an active ventilation and explosion-proof system to reduce fire/explosion risks, independent compartment fire suppression, and a long-duration fire resistance design exceeding 3 hours.
Remarkable Cost Reduction and Efficiency Improvement
To optimize investment and reduce construction costs, the Aqua-C2.5S mini supports DC+AC pre-assembly at the factory, with only 3 days required for on-site installation and commissioning, cutting the time by 50%. The design of internal DC cabling within the container further reduces on-site construction safety risks. The active balancing BMS technology addresses the issue of internal cell inconsistency in battery packs caused by prolonged passive balancing, eliminating the need for system shutdown and manual balancing, thereby significantly reducing maintenance costs and improving operational efficiency.
With tailored products for Japanese customers, rapid-response local services, and customized solutions, CLOU is strengthening its position in Japan's market. The successful commissioning of its first independent energy storage project in Japan not only lays a solid foundation for CLOU's deep cultivation of the Japanese and global high-end markets but also showcases its advanced energy storage technology and strong local implementation capabilities, providing an efficient and reliable practice sample for the global energy transition.
